My newest novel, Jimmy My Hero, Chapter One

The noise from the television fell silent. Sally awoke to the silence of the darkness. The lights in the family room were out. Only the emergency lights were lit in each room for easy maneuverability. The only other moving creature in the family room was Jimmy, an American Mastiff. Jimmy weighed one hundred seventy pounds and stood three feet tall.

Jimmy was nudging Sally’s leg, warning her. He knew something was different. “What’s wrong Jimmy?” Sally whispered as she patted Jimmy’s head, and reached for her 9mm Glock which she had lodged between the cushions of the sofa.

Jimmy gave a whimper and tried to get closer in order to protect Sally. “Jimmy lay.” Jimmy positioned himself closer to the sofa, not making any noise.

Sally rose from the sofa and chambered a round, “Jimmy stay,” Sally moved away from the sofa in her stocking feet towards the hallway.

The emergency lights which plugged into the electrical wall outlets were lit providing easy passage down the long dark hallway.

A noise was heard from one of the rooms at the end of the hallway. As Sally passed by the emergency hallway lights, she unplugged the lights from the wall outlets and continued to move to the end of the hallway.

Coming to the end of the hallway, Sally peered into the bedroom which was on the left side of the hallway. Clear. A light beam flashed from the office on her right. Okay. Sally smiled pumping her head up and down.

She pulled a mirror from her pants pocket to scout the room. Aha. There he is. Sally smiled watching and waiting for the right moment so she could enter the room and catch the intruder in a compromised position.

Sally stood five feet, ten inches tall. Her platinum blonde hair was pulled back into a short seven inch long pony tail. Her feminine body style hid her hard rock body physique.

Within thirty seconds the intruder bent over her desk to look at something of interest when she stepped through the door and pushed him onto the desk with her foot.

Ben Depew caught himself from falling face first onto the desk by dropping what he was looking at and landing with hands flat on the top of the desk.

“Stay. Don’t move,” Sally commanded. Depew obeyed.

“Now stand up slowly. Put your hands where I can see them. Spread your legs apart…slowly,” Sally pressed her Glock into Depew’s lower back.

Without hesitation, Depew did exactly as directed hoping his partner, Mike Draper, would soon enter the room and take control of the situation.

Depew was six feet tall, with a red Mohawk style haircut. His ‘low-rise’ pants hung low on his body exposing his plaid boxer shorts. He wore tattoos on his head, neck and arms. His tattoos had the appearance of being gang related.

“What are you looking for, asshole?” Sally pressed her weapon a little harder into the Depew’s back to accent her demands.

“Nutin,” muttered Depew.

“What’s that? Speak clearly,” She pressed harder on the Depew’s back. “Nothing.” he said more clearly.

“Then what are you doing in my house if you’re looking for nothing, asshole?” Sally pushed Depew forward with her Glock until he fell across her desk, face down. “Hands behind your back, moron and don’t move,” Sally stepped back and to her right where she had some cable tie handcuffs. She applied the cuffs to Depew’s wrist and cinched them down tight against his wrist. Sally walked over to the cabinet and pulled out her emergency lantern placing it on her desk to light up the room and dialed 911 to report the home invasion.

Jimmy was lying on the floor in the family room near the sofa where he was commanded to stay. Being the obedient dog that Jimmy was, he waited for his next command when he detected a strange scent and sound from the other side of the sofa. Jimmy sniffed the air to determine if the scent was a foreign odor or a familiar one. Unable to place the scent as familiar, he crawled around the sofa to see where the strange odor and sound was coming from. At the edge of the sofa, he sampled the air one more time. Still unable to identify the scent as familiar, he began to follow the odor down the hallway towards the bedroom and office to where Sally was with the Depew.

Jimmy rounded the hallway corner towards the bedroom when he heard an unfamiliar command from the stranger standing inside of the office doorway. “Put the phone down. Now,” Draper commanded. Sally’s head snapped back and her mouth fell open at Draper’s words. She cautiously laid the phone receiver on the desk with an open connection to 911 Emergency.

“Now the gun. Put your weapon on the floor and kick it over here to me.”

Sally saw Jimmy quietly standing outside of the office behind Draper. Sally looked at Jimmy as she was placing her weapon on the floor and gave him a head command to attack by lifting her head up slightly and then down as if she were looking at Draper and then placed her weapon on the floor.

Draper stood six feet, three inches tall. He had a shaved head with a beard that looked like a six day growth. His physique indicated that he was a weight lifter from the way he wore his clothes.

Jimmy waited for his command from Sally and then he leaped forward onto the back of the Draper knocking him forward towards the desk and Depew.

Sally with a leaping karate kick knocked the gun out of the Draper’s hand as he fell forward and then she flipped around to give an elbow thrust to Depew’s face as he stood up from the desk.

Jimmy jumped onto the back of the Draper who was now face down on the floor and stood on his back to keep him pinned down as Sally stomped on the wrist joint, breaking his left wrist.

Outside of Sally’s house, the Las Vegas SWAT team was preparing to storm her house. SWAT Team Boy Two leader Robert Bowans was standing at the ready by the front door with his point man Brian Dabney while SWAT Team Edward Five leader Greg Eades was standing by the rear door with his point man Dwight Hitner waiting for the command to be given to enter.

Simultaneously receiving the command from the SWAT Team Commander Nathan Walters, Team Boy Two and Team Edward Five smashed their respective doors open and rushed into the house with shields at the ready in case of assault weapons fire.

The SWAT teams snaked their way into each room on the first floor and assumed their SWAT positions as they cleared each room. Team Edward Five then snaked its way up the stairway to the second floor of the house and cleared each of the rooms accordingly. Team Boy Two stayed on the first floor as guard for Team Edward Five.

The only area left to check was a long dark hallway on the first floor. Hallways are considered a dead man’s trap, because there’s no escape route as there is within a room. Carefully Team Boy Two and Team Edward Five slid down the walls of the dark hallway to the end and stopped at the intersection of the bedroom and office. Rear guards Beverly Holt and Jay Davenport stayed at the entry point of the hallway to protect the rear of the SWAT teams. The bedroom on the left side of the hallway was cleared by team leader Bowans. Team leader Eades spotted one female with a weapon in the office on the right side of the hallway and signaled Bowans of what he had seen.

Bowans pulled a tactical mirror out of his cargo pants to survey the room. The mirror showed one male on the floor with a dog standing on his back and one male lying across the desk, face down with a female holding a gun.

Bowans and two of his officers, marksman Charles Calhoun and negotiator Lee Roy Baker rushed into the office and was followed by two officers from SWAT team Edward Five, point man Dwight Hitner and explosive expert Glen Hinkle.

“Police, drop your weapon. Do it now,” Bowans shouted as they rushed through the doorway.

Sally dropped her weapon onto her desk and raised her hands above her head at the surprise entry of the SWAT team.

“Move away from the men. Do it now,” Bowans motioned Sally with his left hand as he pointed his weapon at her.

“Now order your dog off this guy,” Bowans pointed to the male laying on the floor. “Do it now.”

Jimmy’s high-set rounded ears moved back and forth when he heard key words spoken by Bowans. Jimmy then curled his upper lip showing his white canine teeth through his black facial mask and gave a defensive growl. Bowans immediately took a step back at Jimmy’s disagreeing tone.

Bowans stood six feet tall, and had a well defined muscular body which was slightly detectable behind his SWAT gear.

“Call your dog off or I’ll shoot him where he stands.” Bowans said through clenched teeth.

“Apparently you don’t know anything about this dog breed, now do you?” Sally said with a smirk.

“What are you talking about?” Bowans’ face wore a frowned.

“This dog breed is always in charge and rules his domain and this home is his domain. He’ll die defending his turf no matter who you are; friend or foe,” Sally’s face showed a victory smile.

“I don’t give a damn, because he’ll die first if he’s not off that guy when I count to three.”

“One!” The silence was heavy with the pause for the dog to retreat.

“Two!” Bowans began to move his gun from Sally to Jimmy.

Jimmy’s one hundred seventy pound body immediately leaped forward onto Bowans forcing him backwards into his four teammates making him lose control of his weapon and knocking his team off balance and out of control.

Jimmy stood over Bowans’ gun and looked directly into Bowans’ eyes daring him to move. Bowans did not move as he glanced at Jimmy and then quickly looked away.

Sally grabbed her weapon from the desk as SWAT team Edward Five came running into the office from the hallway with their guns at the ready for the kill.

“Stop and don’t shoot or most of you will die here for nothing,” Sally stood her ground in a defensive stance with her Glock’s red laser sight dead center on Eades’ forehead.

Jimmy automatically assumed his new assignment of defense against the intruding SWAT team as he saw Sally move into her position; a defensive move they both trained for should the need arise.

Seeing both Jimmy and Sally ready for battle, the rushing SWAT team stopped and lowered their guns in a sign of compromise surrender.

“Good,” Sally began, “These two men broke into my home and I don’t know who they are or why.”

“Okay, let’s start at the beginning and tell me what’s happening here,” SWAT team negotiator Earnest Berg looked directly in Sally’s eyes as he stepped in front of his teammates with both hands raised in a surrender position.

Berg stood six feet tall, with an athletic build and a thick neck that accented his square jaw.

Sally ordered Depew and Draper to sit on the floor to her left with their backs against the wall and put Jimmy in charge of them.

Both Depew and Draper obeyed without hesitation because of what they had witnessed between Jimmy and SWAT teams.

Jimmy obeyed walking over with a demeanor of being in charge and instinctively sat to the left of the Depew and Draper and watched both of them and the SWAT teams as he guarded his domain.

“Okay,” Sally continued after Jimmy assumed his position. “My name is Sally Jacobson. I am going to be the new SWAT team Director here in Las Vegas.”

The faces of both SWAT teams dropped and silence filled the room for what seemed like an hour. No one dared to speak or move out of shock until Sally broke the silence.

“Okay everyone, let’s take these two men down town and book them on burglary and tomorrow we’ll talk further about them and what’s going to happen in the department.”

“But what about having an officer come in and take a report before we move them, Director?” SWAT team leader Eades said.

Eades stood six feet, five inches tall with a Mesomorph rectangular shaped muscular body.

“Good idea. I’m still a little shaken from what has happened here and I’m running off my adrenaline rush,” Sally shook her head as she lowered her weapon.

Sally ordered Jimmy to stand down and moved him to her side as she walked behind her desk. The SWAT team took control of the prisoners and updated SWAT Team Commander Walters of what had happened. A detective from the Command vehicle called in the Las Vegas Crime Scene Investigation Team and then came inside the house and informed everyone what was about to happen.

Thirty minutes later the CSI team arrived and took control of the scene. Photos of Draper and Depew were taken by CSI. The two prisoners were then released to North Las Vegas Police Sergeant Kerry Woods who took them down town and booked them on burglary.

Two and one half hours later, Las Vegas CSI had finished their investigation and left Sally’s house with all of the information they needed for the District Attorney to charge Draper and Depew with one count each of breaking and entering and one count each of burglary and assault.

“Jimmy My Hero,” a novel by Yours Truly.

With today starting off not the way one would like his or her day to start off, I was ready to do nothing, not even write another chapter in my current novel, “Jimmy My Hero”. But as I started out with a mistake here and some mistakes there, I pushed myself ahead anyway and wrote. So here’s what I wrote and if you don’t mind, tell me what you think, it’s only a rough draft so you’re not going to hurt my feelings. IF you do, I’ll just crumple it up throw it a way and redo it. That’s what writers do. RIGHT? Sorry, What we writes do is Write.

Chapter Five

Sally’s door bell rang. Turning towards the door, her mouth and chin began to tremble, her eyes widened. She knew Michael had gone outside with his CSI crew and they knew the door was unlocked for their re-entry. No one else was to stop by the house.

“Who is it?” Sally voice crackled not looking at the Security Camera.

“Sally, its Director Walters. Is everything okay?” Walters pushed the door handle lever down and opened the door.

Walters stepped inside the door and Sally jumped onto Walters hugging him, bellowing as tears streamed down her face.

“What’s the matter, Sally?” Walters gently peeled Sally’s arms from around his neck and held her at arm’s length as she trembled in his hands.

“I don’t know if I can do this,” Sally wiped her tears away.

“What’s that Sally?” Director Walters looked around the family room as he walked her from the foyer and sat her down.

“This.” Sally swung her left arm around the family room.

“I don’t understand what you’re talking about Sally. Can you be more specific?” Director Walters said comforting her.

“Me becoming the Director of the Las Vegas SWAT team,” Sally wiped the discharge from her nose.

“First there was the break in and now this shooting. What’s next? Will a semi come off the Beltway and smash into my house?”

“But Sally, you handled the burglary like a pro.”

“Thank you for saying that, Director. That was kind of you, but that’s what I was trained to do. This attack on my home and me, that’s something altogether different.”

“But Sally you were trained for that too. The role was just reversed. You didn’t have you SWAT armor on and your team with you, but the line of fire and ambush is the same as if you were going into the crime scene,” Director Walters consoled Sally.

“Now that you’ve said that Director, you’re right, but it’s all too close together. It’s like wham bam, thank you ma’am.”

“Well Sally, let me say this about the job. You will be having this kind of day as the director of SWAT. There will be days where it never stops. You’ll end up with twelve to sixteen hour days. Sometimes you’ll have some twenty-four hour days.”

“But that’s not how it was in Eureka, sir.”

“I know Sally, but this isn’t Eureka. This is Las Vegas, a twenty-four hour city where the fun never stops.”

“Yeah, I’m beginning to see that. Maybe Bowans and Eades were right.”

“About what, Sally?”

“That they would be more qualified to be the SWAT Director than I would be.”

“Nonsense, Sally…” Director Walters was cut short when Jimmy heard the door latch click at the front door. Jimmy was at the front door quicker than a lightning flash to make sure it wasn’t another intruder as CSI team members Michael and Reed opened the front door and entered.

“Morning Director,” Michael smiled entering the family room, Jimmy following.

“Good morning, Mike. What have you found out so far?”

“Do you mind if we sit down and go over what we’ve found and what we’re going to do?” Michael looked at Director Walters and Sally.

“No, please have a seat,” Sally waved Michael and Reed towards the tan wrap around sectional and matching sofa.

“I’m sorry Sally, but our second team had arrived and they had some updated info for me and she wanted us to follow her to the gravel pit in order for us to see the new data,” Michael’s chin dipped towards his chest, his shoulders slumped downward.

“That’s alright, Michael. It’s too late to worry about that now,” Sally grimaced.

“I’m so embarrassed,” Michael’s face flushed, “I know better than that.”

“So what do you have Michael,” Director Walters’ head was tilted slightly left looking at Michael.

“Well we’ve had a gang related incident occur in the gravel pit last night, and that’s why you had the two stray bullets come through your window.

“What you’re telling us Michael is there were only two bullets that found their way to Sally’s house from the gravel pit?” Director Walters looked at Michael over the top of his glasses.

“Yes sir. Reed and I walked around the house and only found the broken glass from the bedroom window,” Michael nodded his head.

“What kind of ammo were they shooting?”

“We’re still doing our investigation, Director and as soon as we finish I can advise you on what we found,” Michael nudged Reed and both of them stood up and began walking to the front door.

“Not so fast there, Mr. Baldwin. Is the North Las Vegas Police over there? If so, I want to talk with the Sergeant in charge, if you don’t mind,” Director Walters held his hand chest high slowing both Michael and Reed’s speedy exit.

“Yes sir, Director. You can follow Reed and me over to the pit and you can talk with him,” Michael bit his lower lip averting eye contact.

“Okay, but before we go, I want to do another walk around the house with you and Reed,” Director Walters’ eyes narrowed as he looked at both Michael and Reed and walked towards the front door.

Sally, Jimmy and Reed walked with Director Walters towards the front door and Michael followed shaking his head slightly dismissing Walters’ comment, “That’s fine, sir. I don’t mind. Another look might be needed in the long run to close this investigation from the house’s standpoint.”

Walking out the front door, the group turned left and began the walk around on the north side of the house looking up and down at the stucco for any signs of damage and on the ground for any debris.

The shrubbery was not damaged from any falling debris, nor was there anything found on the ground of the north side. This side of the house checked clear.

The group of five continued to the west side of the house; the Beltway side. They looked again, up and down the side of the house for any damage to the stucco, nothing. They scanned for any debris on the shrubs and the ground, nothing.

As the foursome were rounding the corner of the house to check the south side of the house, Reed called them back to the center of the house where the shrubbery was fairly new and small. “Look at this,” Reed pointed at the stucco, “This looks like a sloppy homeowner repair job on the stucco. The repair pattern is consistent and it looks like they patched up some automatic weapons fire. Do you see it?” Reed moved his hand in the arc of the pattern where stucco was pushed into suspected holes and then smeared over the original stucco.

Sally stepped back from the group when she saw the patch work and heard Reed describe what it was. She clasped her arms around her chest and her body began to tremble.

The search of the exterior of the house reached a new height and they began to look at the stucco differently. They found several other similar designs in the stucco all along the side of the house. Several of the holes higher up on the house were not patched. Sally’s moaning became uncontrollable as she crumbled to the ground covering her ears.

Jimmy was by Sally’s side with his head on her right shoulder trying to comfort her as she sat on the ground. Seeing that no one heard Sally’s distress, Jimmy turned and yelped towards the group.

Director Walters hearing Jimmy ran back to Sally and picked her up off the ground and held her. “Come with me Sally let’s go back into the house.”

Sally tried backing away from Director Walters with quick, jerky steps, “No! I don’t ever want to go back into that house again.

“Sally, listen to me. We’re going to get through this thing together, okay?”

“No, I don’t think so. I’m going back home,” Sally pushed away from Walters and ran with Jimmy towards the front of the house to get into her Ford King Ranch pickup.

Director Walters caught up with Sally as she got into the cab of her pickup and slammed the door shut. Walters banged on the driver’s window, “Sally, let’s work this out together. You’re going to need to get over this, because it’s part of the job and you know it. I’m sure Justin taught you this aspect of the job.”

Sally drove off leaving Walters standing talking to himself. With tears streaming down her face, she could hardly see where she was going. She stopped the truck dead in the traffic lane, dried her eyes and slammed both fist down on the steering wheel, “Dammit.”

Jimmy yelped from the bed of the truck to get Sally’s attention. When Sally turned and looked at Jimmy, he whined at her and gave her a sad look with his head tilted towards the left.

Feeling sorry for Jimmy to be going through this nightmare, she pulled the pickup over to the side of the road, got out and ran back to Jimmy and gave him a hug when he put his head on her shoulder, “I’m sorry Jimmy. I’m not being a very good Alpha Dog for you, am I?”

Sally got back into her pickup and returned to the house. She found Director Walters and the two CSI members and apologized for acting the way she had.

“Not to worry, Sally,” Director Walters winked at her and put his arm around her shoulder and gave it a quick squeeze.

“Okay, we’re done outside here for now and we do have a lot of questions and a lot of evidence that has not been evaluated as of yet and I am very sorry that this has happened to you Sally. You definitely do not need this happening in your life, especially right now,” Michael looking down and rubbing the back of his neck.

“Thank you Michael,” Sally chin was trembling.

“Yes Michael, thanks for your help and Reed’s help here this morning in finding this evidence. Let’s get over to the gravel pit and see what they have found and so I can talk to the Las Vegas Officer in charge,” Director Walters smiled extending his arm for Michael and Reed to lead the way.

Sergeant Brody Hensley Interview

Herb <smiling>: Good morning everyone and welcome to Saturday morning. Today we have Sergeant Brody Hensley with us. Good Morning Brody.

Brody <smiling, as he sits consuming the stage chair>: Morning Herb. How you doing this morning?

Herb: I’m fine. You’re a big guy, Brody. How tall are you?

Brody: I’m 6 foot 5 inches and 258 pounds.

Herb <sizing Brody up>: I’m surprised that you’re not a professional basketball player or football player.

Brody < big grin>: In high school and college I was. I played both sports. That’s where I got my nickname.

Herb: And what is your nickname?

Brody: I’m the ‘Big Black Oak Tree’, because of my height and spread or reach.

Herb: Yeah, you are a huge muscular guy alright. I bet you didn’t have to worry about getting into many fights as you were growing up, did   you?

Brody: <flexing his biceps>: No Herb, that’s one of the many things I didn’t have to worry about; however, I had many other things since I was so large. <Brody smiling>

Herb: So tell us Brody, what’s your responsibility in the novel American Phoenix Rising?

Brody: I’m the Sergeant in charge of the Freedom Rings Community where many of the Spartan Guard lived with their families.

Herb: And as the Sergeant of security, what was your responsibility?

Brody <looking embarrassed>: Oh, okay. I was the Sergeant of Security at     the Community. I had a crew of 600 men who patrolled the Community looking for intruders and over all safety of the Community.

Herb: So, your crew was armed 24-7?

Brody: Yes. With rumors of the government preparing to take over the   Country and impose Martial Law and taking away all of our personal freedoms like the First and Second Amendments to start, we had to be prepared for anything.

Herb: So I understand that an invasion did occur, am I correct?

Brody: You’re right, Herb. It was well planned and orchestrated, thanks to the three traitors in charge of making it happen.

Herb: So how demanding was that invasion?

Brody: Oh my. We trained all of the time to make sure that we were ready and we didn’t see this one coming, and we paid dearly for it.

Herb: How’s that, Brody?

Brody: We were out gunned and our transportation was inadequate for such a surge.

Herb: I understand that you were the bearer of bad news plus the hunter of the three traitors?

Brody: Yeah, and the bearer of bad news isn’t a job for the faint of heart. The hunter also requires a set of ‘brass ones’, because the traitors could be your best friends.

Herb: WOW!! That’s too much, Brody. Well, I guess we’ll let our listeners live that job with you when they get their copy of American Phoenix Rising at the link below. So until next time everyone, have a safe one and we’ll see you right back here on the American Phoenix Rising Interview Room.
